Professional Growth sessions

Would you like some private 1-2-1 time to chat through any case related queries, ways to word something in a written communication, or how to approach further recognition within the industry? If so, you're in the right place.

What are we offering?
We know that many people work by themselves and it can be invaluable to share ideas and bounce ideas off others. We know this because this is what we do within our team, and because we have supported other individuals over the years too, whether on how to communicate something, reviewing the literature together or by offering different perspectives on case management.

Many of us here at Pet Behaviour Company (PetBC) have spent time working in the Higher Education sector so we have a wealth of experience teaching and mentoring and it's something we love doing too. Therefore, we are offering opportunity to spend some one on one time with an experienced clinician from PetBC.

What will be covered in the sessions?
Whatever animal behaviour and training topics you would like to discuss!

We are happy to discuss any areas of case management related to animal behaviour and training. Please note that Lynn Hewison (non-vet Clinical Animal Behaviourist) will likely be facilitating the majority of sessions. Lynn has a wealth of experience within the sector and is able to discuss recognition within the industry, and some of the routes and options towards this.

If one of our veterinary behaviourists is leading on a session, general veterinary behaviour principles may be discussed but these cannot be taken as recommendations on any cases due to vets only being able to make specific recommendations for animals actively under their care. We can however discuss how to communicate any potential concerns or observations to different parties involved in cases, and any references which may be helpful to include.

Who is the session for?
For dog training and/or behaviour professionals who want a safe place to discuss anything related to training and behaviour. All sessions are facilitated by active and experienced clinicians from the Pet Behaviour Company.

Ideas or resources which are shared within a session, if applied to a case are your responsibility as the lead on that case. Individuals at Pet Behaviour Company although facilitating these sessions are not responsible for cases which have not been referred to us directly. As such, we request that if you take any ideas away from these support sessions, these are presented as your ideas to any parties involved in the case e.g. client, vet, other professionals, and not as ideas from individuals from Pet Behaviour Company. This is of particular importance should any of our veterinary behaviourists join or facilitate a session as they, as vets, cannot make specific recommendations for animals which have not been referred to them and are not actively under their care. We are however happy to discuss general principles and aid in how to communicate observations or concerns to different parties involved in cases.

Please note that sessions are non-refundable. If you cannot make the session you have booked for any reason, and can provide us with at least 24 hours notice, if we can, we will try and move you to another session.

Who is facilitating the online sessions?
The sessions will be facilitated and hosted by individuals who are clinically active and experienced both theoretically as well as practically working with a wide range of animals and problem behaviours.
For more information about any of the instructors who may be present at sessions, please click on their names: Lynn Hewison, Miri Prior or Himara Van Haevermaet.

Testimonials:

My training sessions with Lynn started with a brief refresher on learning theory accompanied by an imagined barking dog and a car with Pavlov and Skinner alternately sitting in the driver or passenger seat! We then embarked on revisiting a case study of mine that involved feline aggression. What started as an exercise in using learning theory to develop an effective training plan became a comprehensive roadmap for critically evaluating a behaviour case from data collection to effective counselling. The pieces required to create positive behaviour change in animals, and their humans, professionally, ethically and with a scientifically sound basis.

Evaluating and enabling behaviour change needs a multifaceted skill set and people working in the field of clinical animal behaviour aren't always working alongside colleagues. Missing out on having a shared space to talk through problems, difficulties and successes. I recommend training with Lynn to people working towards qualifications or accreditation in the field of animal behaviour, those starting in practice or anyone who just wants to talk through a case. Lynn helped me see where theory and practice come together, sharing my sense of achievement when it all made sense. I feel more confident in re-applying for accreditation but more importantly I feel more confident in my ability to help cats and the people who care for them in the future.
